The Invitational

Congratulations to TA's Unforgiven-IV for winning Team Leviathan Gaming's The Invitational! He managed to outlast an deep and talented field over two full days of playing. The finals were a magnificent double-series against TLG's Bushr, whose performance also shone brightly this weekend. Thanks to TLG and all the casters and players for an exciting tournament that showed off the strengths of the Gwent community.

We're very proud of Unforgiven's first big tournament win: He's incredibly talented and is an impressive up and coming name on the competitive scene. Be sure to watch out for Aretuza Report # 7 as we get to know more about him and his experience.

Member Spotlight: Kafunow

Kafunow is a German Gwent Streamer/Content Creator who takes nothing very seriously. He's been playing Gwent since the closed Beta and loves the game so much that he decided to share his experience or decks with the community in Gwent. In his lifetime, he started playing with cards at a very young age with Pokemon Cards, later Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Shadowverse etc. His favourite Quote is: “I fear not the man who has practiced 10000 Decks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one Deck 10000 times”

First of all, thank you for spending time with us in this interview. How are you and what have you been up to in Gwent?

Life is tough at the moment thanks to Corona, but at least I have more time for Gwent. Most of the time I try new decks, strategies, or combos even if they don’t work as intended. Going for Top 64 or even Top 16 is just not enjoyable for me, I'm too old for this sh*t.

How long have you been with Team Aretuza and what is your role in the team?

I joined Team Aretuza in May 2020 as a Content Creator so I am relatively new to the team. My job is to make videos, so if anyone needs something they can ask me.

How is your stream going?

Stream time is the best time of my day, even if I make a lot of mistakes during that time. I’m more interested in chatting with my chat rather than playing optimally which leads to a lot of mistakes that I can only blame on RNG or bad draw luck :)

Which faction/s and archetypes are you currently enjoying the most in this expansion?

My favourite faction is Nilfgaard, because you can have so much fun disrupting your opponent in Nilfgaard gameplay and I love the little details in each game from spy positioning to minimizing the outcome of RNG on your cards. My favourite archetype however is Mahakam Forge Harald Gord, it’s just Harald Gord in its peak performance and Spell-a-tael was my favourite Deck from Beta.

Any overall thoughts or feedbacks on the expansion and the current state of the game?

The expansion is relatively fresh so it’s hard to give valuable feedback. Skellige makes it even harder, since it's performing so well that you must have at least some counter against it or you have a bad time. The expansion gave us a lot of great options for every faction and I believe when Skellige gets nerfed a little bit that we will have a great experience playing Gwent.

There are 3 weeks left before the end of the season. The recent Invitational tournament gave us an idea of which decks are popular and competitive this season. Moreover, most players are still experimenting and discovering decks and archetypes that work in their favor. Wishing you the best of luck on the ladder!

Luis

Luis has been a gamer for most of his life. His first console was a Playstation 1 which he got at age 7. A few years later, he acquired a Gameboy Advance that became his gateway to the Pokemon series. He spent multiple hours playing through the Kanto and Hoenn Region with his friends. In 2011, he started playing Dota 1 and was his entry to the MOBA genre of games. Shortly after, he started playing League of Legends which he played from 2012 to 2017. Towards the end of the year 2017, he bought a Playstation 4 and played Destiny 2 and a few single player games on the side such as God of War, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Witcher 3 which he enjoyed the most. His first exposure to Gwent was back in Witcher 3. He realized that he was spending most of his time playing Gwent and collecting all the cards instead of doing side quests and story quests. Fast forward to 2019, he found out that Gwent, the standalone game, would be released on iOS. On the release day itself last October, he immediately downloaded the game and chose Northern Realms as his first faction since this is the faction he played the most back in Witcher 3 Gwent.
